It is a new year and I have been learning that the holiday season is very important, yet very different in Japan compared to the United States. First of all, Christmas itself is not a very important holiday in Japan. Children do receive presents however generally not much is made of the day. In fact I even had to go to class and had a test on Christmas day! This was a very foreign concept to me, however I didn’t mind too much. I was able to spend some time with fellow exchange students over the holidays, however it was still quite a lonesome time. I am used to spending the holiday with family and the usual western traditions, however this was quite a difference. When the new year rolled around many Japanese people spent time with families, and many went to shrines and temples. I found these traditions interesting and was able to learn a lot about how the holidays are spent in Japan compared to the United States.
