Well, it’s finally my final month in Japan. I have to say this experience as a whole has really been an enlightening and amazing experience. Not only did I learn a substantial amount of the Japanese language, but I also learned so much about the culture of Japan. I also learned a lot about other cultures as well, considering I met exchange students like me from all over the world. I am very glad I made the choice to study abroad in Japan and happy that I had the opportunity to travel here.

It’s rainy season in Japan, with the heat and humidity it feels like the State of Florida. But it’s interesting to see that in Japan the schools and work keep going through the summer. I couldn’t imagine having to keep going to school during summer in America, yet since they have the rainy season here I guess it does make more sense. There's not much to do outside when it’s always raining and really humid, I myself much prefer being in an air conditioned room.
May is here and summer is just around the corner. The nice warm weather is unfortunately soon to change to become very hot and humid. I have so far become fairly accustomed to the Japanese culture, there are many differences to my own and there was definitely a hurdle to cross in terms of really getting accustomed to daily life. I have also been learning an incredible amount not only in the classroom but outside it as well. I feel very lucky that pretty much everyone I have met so far have been genuinely great people. I am really enjoying my time here not only because it’s a very rare experience to have, but I am learning an incredible amount as well.
As the Spring has progressed I have really enjoyed the changing of the season, and it was interesting to see the effect of this on the Japanese traditions and festivals. I especially enjoyed the Hanami, as it really reflected an appreciation of nature but also a good chance to hanging out with friends. I got to see some cultural festivals and many beautiful plants spring up. As classes have started back up again it’s not as easy to travel, yet I do have golden week to look forward to in May.
During the Spring break I have been able to do much of the traveling I planned to do during this time abroad. Nevertheless I have begun to really feel culture shock and a sort of homesickness. However I am gradually getting used to the differences and find solace in the friends I’ve made and great experiences I’ve had. It has been wonderful being completely immersed in an entirely different culture even though it can be tough at times really feeling at home here.
The first semester had already come and gone, it really feel like time is flying. I am glad that I decided to stay in Japan for a year because I would hate to already have to leave. I don’t think that the culture shock has hit me too hard since I have made many friends who have been really kind. I am still in awe of all of the new cultural things I am witnessing constantly and am really glad that I get to have this experience. I’m looking forward to not only seeing the cherry blossom bloom this coming spring but also see even more of the culture and famous locations.
