In order to achieve this MLO I took the classes: Materialism in Japan and the West, Area Studies approaches and Methodology and Modern United Nations Preparation Course.
Reflective Narrative
3.1: The way that these classes supported my understanding of a secondary culture and society was significant. In these classes I took while abroad I was able to learn about various other cultures besides Japanese. The the classes 'Area Studies' and 'Modern United Nations' I mostly focused on the country and culture of South Africa. Within the class 'Materialism' we studied the differences and similarities between European and Japanese cultures. We had to study the culture and perspectives of these nations along with various data and research regarding the issues within the nation itself. Therefore I was able to gain a full understanding of not only the cultures, but a deep understanding of these nations (Reference South Africa Positional Paper Below). The reason this is a good piece of evidence is that it expresses how deep of an understanding I had about the South African nation and culture. 3.2 In pretty much all of these classes, we were able to constantly make many comparisons and differences between the Japanese culture, my culture and the third culture. This was very helpful at expanding my worldview on many cultural perspectives. I was able to see a very interesting diversity of the many different cultures I had studied, and now I have a significantly stronger grasp of world cultures.
