In order to achieve this MLO I took the classes: JAPN 215, JAPN 420 and JAPN 306
Reflective Narrative
2.1: The way that I achieved this MLO through these classes is that each class was effective at not only raising a significant interest in certain aspects of the culture, but pushing me to study them in depth. During the course of these classes and the study abroad experience I was able to gain a grasp of not only Japanese culture but also the Japanese worldview. The way I accomplished this in my classes here was through the many books and videos we watched and discussed on the Japanese culture. We also had to think critically and analyse this culture throughout Japanese society. We did this during the several essays and presentations I had to work on for these classes. An example of these presentations and papers can be seen below in my Cool Japan Presentation and my Cool Japan Paper (Reference Cool Japan PPT/ Paper below). The reason these are good evidence is that they show my deep level of understanding of Japanese culture and heritage, and the many perspectives and ideas that come from Japan. 2.2: In many ways I was able to compare and contrast my own culture to the Japanese culture throughout these classes with the discussions we had, but I accomplished this very effectively as well by studying abroad. An example of this critical thinking and comparison of cultures can be seen in my Japanese Hierarchy essay below (Reference Japanese Hierarchy Essay Below). The reason why this is a good example is that it shows a comparison of the old and new Japanese culture and how there were contrasts and comparisons to Western culture. While abroad I was immersed in the culture and language, and had to try and integrate and understand this culture well in order to be accepted well in the society.
